Site speed vs. brand loyalty: How we helped IQOS Club win both
In this article

If your platform takes longer to load than your morning coffee order, chances are you’re not just losing patience, you’re losing revenue. In today’s digital reality, every extra second a user has to wait is a missed opportunity. Site speed goes beyond being a tech choice, it’s an essential business decision. In this article, we’ll walk you through how we helped IQOS Club optimize their loyalty platform for performance and UX, and how that translated into smoother user journeys, more reward redemptions, and deeper brand loyalty.

Is your site speed costing you revenue?

Let’s be honest: no matter how exciting your rewards program is, if your users need to reload a page twice just to claim a freebie, you’re already out of the loyalty game. Loyalty platforms live and die by how effortless they feel - and in a world of frictionless everything, slow is the new broken.
That’s the challenge we tackled for IQOS Club, a loyalty platform that was already offering users a rewarding experience. But as the platform evolved and adoption grew, it became clear that performance optimizations were needed to keep the experience as seamless as the brand promise.
Users were engaged, but not for long. We needed to turn that around by making the platform faster, cleaner, and more intuitive. The goal? Turn every click into action, every second into value, and every interaction into a stronger connection with the brand.

Optimizing performance that users feel

When we talk about performance, we’re not just chasing load times on paper. We’re talking about perceived speed, real-world user behavior, how quickly someone can move from login to claiming a reward, from entering a product code to feeling like they just “leveled up”. We audited the IQOS platform from both technical and UX angles, focusing on:

  • Time to first meaningful interaction
  • Number of steps required to complete common actions
  • Drop-off rates mid-flow
  • Real user feedback about friction points

These insights shaped the roadmap. We weren’t just optimizing code, we were removing obstacles between users and the value the brand was offering.

How we rebuilt IQOS Club’s UX to drive real loyalty

Here’s how we approached the transformation:

  • Simplified user flows: We reduced the number of interactions needed to earn or redeem points. Fewer clicks, clearer navigation, and more predictable logic paths made the experience smoother from the start.
  • Framework upgrade: We shifted the front-end from Vue.js components inside Blade, Laravel’s template engine, to React - a move that gave us more flexibility, better structure, and cleaner state management. This made real-time updates faster and helped us scale new features without breaking existing ones.
  • PWA transformation: Mobile was the preferred device for most users, and traditional login flows just weren’t cutting it. So we turned the entire experience into a Progressive Web App (PWA). This gave users app-like access (including offline functionality), faster loading, and easier content updates, without needing to download anything.

The results: A loyalty loop that actually works

With performance up and friction down, users came back more often and stayed longer. Here’s what changed:

  • Load times dropped significantly across key interactions
  • Reward redemptions went up (a clear sign users were finding the platform more usable)
  • Engagement metrics improved, especially for mobile users

And perhaps most importantly, IQOS Club started seeing loyalty not just as a “program”, but as a self-reinforcing loop: good UX made users interact more → more interaction unlocked more value → more value meant more loyalty.

UX + Performance: Why you can’t optimize just one

You can have the fastest site in the world, but if users don’t know where to go, or what to do next, you’re still losing them. That’s why performance and UX were treated as the same in this project.

As we rebuilt the platform, we rethought core UX decisions:

  • Where do users expect to find their rewards?
  • Can we make code entry feel less like homework?
  • How do we reward quick actions with visible feedback?

Every design decision aimed to make the experience feel seamless and responsive - not just technically, but emotionally.

Loyalty platforms turn users into fans, and fans into brand advocates. What made IQOS Club work wasn’t just the tech, it was the strategy behind it:

  • Tiered reward systems that aligned with business goals
  • Smart gamification that kept people coming back
  • Personalized content and incentives based on user behavior

What building (and fixing) a loyalty platform taught us

Redesigning a complex loyalty platform goes beyond site speed, it’s about reshaping how users experience value. In the process of rebuilding the IQOS Club platform, we didn’t just make things faster - we made them better. And because the platform was modular and scalable, we could test, learn, and iterate quickly. A few lessons we’ve learned along the way:

  • Speed is invisible - until it’s missing. Users only notice slowness. Speed isn’t a feature you sell, but it’s one you need to keep users around. Make things fast enough to feel instant.
  • Your platform reflects your brand. If it’s outdated, so is your image. Design and UX are part of your reputation.
  • Optimization is not a one-off job. It’s an ongoing process that pays off in engagement, retention, and ROI.
  • Loyalty is earned, not given. Even in a gamified world, users expect value in exchange for their time. Make it worth it.

Every brand wants loyalty. But not every digital experience earns it.

Brands like IQOS don’t win loyalty by chance - they earn it through seamless performance, intentional UX, and platforms that evolve with their users. Because your audience won’t wait for loading spinners, broken reward flows, or confusing clicks. They return for digital experiences that work every time.

At Grapefruit, we design and build loyalty platforms that do more than look good. From performance audits to full-stack rebuilds, we help brands scale faster, engage deeper, and grow smarter.
